Built for the Australian Sugar Company as a sugar refinery, work began on the Sugar Works in late 1840 and it opened in September 1842.

Aims of the Society

To encourage the study of history, both of the Canterbury District and Australia. To collect records and objects relating to Canterbury's history, to publish journals, periodicals and books relating to the history of Canterbury.

Meetings: Held on the fourth Tuesday of the month (except December)
