Town Centres and Economic Development Program

Revitalising Our Town Centres

Council's Town Centres and Economic Development Program is aimed to revitalise the strip or 'Main Street' shopping areas of the City and improve amenities for businesses, residents, shoppers and visitors.

Our program, which commenced in early 2000, follows the success of other similar initiatives around the world. Often referred to as the 'Main Street Program' these initiatives developed from work done in Canada and the United States in the 1970's.

Our diverse program includes such areas as

  • Streetscape improvement works
  • Facade Improvement Program - "Painting the Towns"
  • Promotion of Outdoor Dining
  • Public Art & Banner installation program
  • Support for local Chambers of Commerce and business networks.
  • Support for Town Centre events and festivals.

The Program covers the Town Centres of Belfield, Belmore, Campsie, Canterbury, Croydon Park, Earlwood, Lakemba, Hurlstone Park, Narwee, Punchbowl and Wiley Park.

Project Teams

As we focus on particular Town Centres, Project Teams are set-up with more formal representation from each area and a detailed plan for local consultations. These Project Teams are aimed to:

  • Represent the issues that are relevant to developing and promoting better town centres for users and more commercially viable centres for business owners.
  • Participate in strategic discussions to address local issues such as parking, street furniture, public art, heritage issues, promotional events and signage.
