Sustainability Tip -- Bring your own coffee cup
Many staff visit the fantastic Manly cafes for a cup of good quality take-away coffee, often served in single-use paper cups with plastic lids. This creates large amounts of unnecessary waste that can be easily avoided!
What to do:
Try taking your own mug with you, and ask them to fill it instead! Re-usable soup mugs are a good option, as they often come with a lid and insulation.
Most cafes are more than happy to do this - it saves them the cost of giving you a disposable cup. In return, it is likely that you will get a much bigger mug of coffee for the same price!
Below are some interesting facts:
- If you used one disposable cup for coffee every day you were at work, you would be throwing out around 240 cups per year!
- Research has estimated that in Manly CBD over 750,000 disposable cups are used annually
- USA produces enough disposable cups per annum to circle the earth 436 times!
- It has been estimated that 25% of our total domestic spending just covers the cost of packaging!
- Lots of great work is being done - In 2002-2003 Kimbriki Recycling and Waste Disposal Centre recorded its most successful recycling year with 74% of resources recovered from the waste stream, of which 93% was recycled and moved off site.
