YAA Program

Help Aspiring Young Business People

The Young Achievement Business Skills Program for 2008 finished on a high note.  This year the city of Canterbury sponsored and provided mentors for a student company called Ripyah! operating from Belmore Youth Resource Centre, as well as providing mentors for a second student company called Fantaisya sponsored by and operating from Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL.

Ripyah! designed and produced an innovative device to keep ipod and mp3 player earphone cords tidy.

Fantaiysa designed and fabricated a humorous and stylish range of underwear for men and women.

Ripyah! won the Secondary Retail Merchandising award at the Castle Towers Trade Fair, and Fantaisya were Finalists for the Secondary UTS Best Use of IT award at the 2008 NSW Awards Night.

The companies have now liquidated and returned their shareholders funds, and produced Annual Reports.  Use the links below if you would like to read the Annual Reports.

The Business Skills Program gives young people a real-life insight into business as they set up and run their own company over a 24 week period.  It provides young people with the skills and knowledge to better equip them for their future working lives.  More than 190,000 young Australians have participated in the program since it's beginnings in the 1970's.

The program is of enormous benefit to the students involved.  The growth seen in the students over the course of the program is amazing.  Many of them go from being incredibly shy and quiet, to being selected as School Captains and Prefects at their schools the following year.

Students wishing to participate in 2009 should register at http://www.yaa.org.au/

The program is also tremendously rewarding for mentors who volunteer their time and experience to facilitate a program that brings together students from very diverse cultural, religious, economic and educational backgrounds.  At the beginning of the program each year most of the students do not know each other - by the end of it they are firm friends who keep in touch with each other and have volunteered to help in subsequent years.

Sponsorship by council and other organisations ensures that the program is free of charge to the students.  Sponsorship opportunities are now available for the program in 2009.  Anyone interested in supporting the program should contact David Coleman on 02 9789 9300.
