Promoting Better Practice Review

In March 2007, the Department of Local Government reviewed Canterbury City Council as part of its Local Government Reform Program - Promoting Better Practice.  The review was designed to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of our operations and provide feedback to assist us to improve our performance.

The Review made 26 recommendations for improvement.  An Action Plan has been prepared to implement these recommendations.  Council endorsed both the Final Report and the Action Plan at the meeting on 25th October 2007.

In broad terms the Review has been very positive, highlighting many recent achievements, and reinforcing areas for improvement that we have already identified and commenced working on.  The Department concluded:

"Council has strong, experienced leadership that is addressing the service delivery within the City, implementing social planning to the benefit of the culturally diverse community, and is focussed on implementing clear strategic directions to meet the change demands on the workplace."
