Haldon Street Festival
10th Anniversary goes off with a bang!
The Mayor of the City of Canterbury, Cr Robert Furolo MP, said the 2009 Haldon Street Festival was a massive success with record crowds enjoying all that the Festival has to offer.
"More than 25,000 people joined in to celebrate the Festival's 10th Anniversary, enjoying over 90 stalls, free rides, cultural performances, entertainment and our famous street parade.
"We had people from hundreds of different cultural backgrounds and religions celebrating side by side - demonstrating the festival's theme of Respect, Unity and Peace.
"The crowds went wild as the street parade made its way down Haldon Street - from the roar of the Harley Davidsons and vintage cars, bellydancers and camels to our local school choirs and dance groups, there was something on show for everyone.
"Our entertainment program could barely fit on two stages with performances for young and old.
"Among the crowd's favourites were popular Arabic singers Lahoud Hatchiti and Laura Hatem, Indigenous Hip Hop Projects and the Cedars of Lebanonas well asThe Horizon Theatre Company Kids Show, and Carribbean Soul.
"I was very pleased to see Haldon Street overflowing with people. The smiles on people's faces said it all - whether they were the little kids having fun on our free carnival rides or the kids-at-heart, who explored the more than 90 stalls that stretched along Haldon Street.
"2009 will definitely be one of the most memorable Haldon Street Festivals I've ever attended and I can't wait to see what the next ten years bring," Mayor Robert Furolo said.
