Recycling and waste disposal for business
If you work in Canterbury City, you need to know how to dispose of your rubbish properly.
Manage Your Waste -- Promoting Better Business in the City of Canterbury
Managing your waste saves you money and helps to keep our City clean and healthy. Dumped rubbish and litter is not only illegal, it creates health risks and pollutes our environment.
Take responsibility for your waste - don't be a dumper. All businesses are required by law to store and dispose of rubbish and not illegally dump it in a public place.
You could receive a fi ne of up to $5,000 if you are caught dumping rubbish in public litter bins or in a public place, such as a street, laneway, footpath, nature strip or park.
For more information, download the brochure 'Manage Your Waste'.

Allocation for bins for business
If you work in Canterbury City, you need to know how to dispose of your rubbish properly.
All commercial properties are entitled to one set of bins per property, not per business occupant. Each property receives a 240 litre red lid rubbish bin and a 240 litre yellow lid recycling bin.
These bins are emptied weekly. Please do not overfill your bins. You must be able to close the lid or the bin will not be emptied.
Please do not put plastic bags, food or other non-recyclable materials in your recycling bin. These should be placed in the red lid rubbish bin. If your recycling bin contains incorrect materials it will not be emptied until the offending items are removed. For more information on what you can and cannot put in your rubbish and recycling bins, please call Council on 9789 9300.
If the bins supplied by Council are insufficient for the amount of waste you produce, you must make arrangements for the proper removal of that waste. Other waste disposal options are listed below.
Bring your bins in! The bins allocated to your property are your responsibility and should be brought in off the street once they have been emptied. If your bins are left out they can obstruct pedestrians or vehicles, and might get stolen, damaged or filled with the wrong materials.
Who to contact
For any lost/stolen bins or additional bin requests please call Council on 9789 9300.
Trade waste service
Council operates a Trade Waste Service for commercial waste. It is a user-pays service that operates 7 days a week and can be tailored to suit your business needs.
Customers are supplied with 240 litre trade waste bins at competitive rates and invoiced quarterly. Any number of bins can be ordered, and they can be emptied as often as required. (The minimum service is one bin emptied weekly.)
Bins are emptied late at night or very early in the morning. There is no fixed contract - customers are simply required to sign an agreement before the service starts.
If you are interested in having our Trade Waste service look after your business waste needs, call Council on 9789 9300. The service can be started within two days of the request.
