Open access

The LH collection is generally on open access with some exceptions:

  • Newspaper clippings and ephemera are in local cabinets which staff will open upon request.
  • In our stack collection
  • Realia and some maps
  • Local newspapers 1950 to date
  • SMH from 1950-65
  • A collection of historic street directories is shelved with the Local History Librarian.

More and more of the resources of our local studies collection are being progressively made available online. The launch of the Pictorial Canterbury Photograph database makes 10,000 images from the collection accessible online. It augments our cemetery transcripts (with photographs) for 2 of the 3 local cemeteries. Indexes to subdivision plans are being progressively published. A database of Canterbury street names and their origins will soon follow. Other information researched by Local Studies staff for council projects and events is being published on this site, and we are hoping to soon add sections of historical publications which are out of print.
