Community Advisory Committees

Disability Access Committee

The Canterbury Disability Access Committee was established by Council in 1993.

We aim to improve access to all areas of the community for residents with disabilities. The Mayor is the Chairperson of the Committee, which is made up of residents with disabilities, carers and service providers. We meet monthly to discuss and carry out projects of importance to residents with disabilities in the Canterbury area. The committee also advises Council on ways to improve Council's services and facilities for people with disabilities.

The committee meets on the third Thursday of each month in the Community Services Division meeting room, 15-21 Ninth Avenue, Campsie. Further information on disability access in the City of Canterbury can be obtained by contacting the Community Worker Disability Services on 9789 9432.

Canterbury Youth Council

A Youth Council is a group of young people who meet regularly to discuss and act on matters of interest to young people. In Canterbury the Youth Council is linked with Canterbury City Council and is called upon to give advice to Council about a broad range of issues that concern youth. Canterbury Youth Council is made up of people aged between 12 and 25 years.

Each year schools and community groups are asked to nominate people to become members and interested people can also nominate themselves, providing they have a link with the Canterbury area, for example, live or work in the area.

Canterbury Youth Council have an annual budget they use to organise projects for and with young people. They decide on current priorities and have been involved in programs like School Holiday Activities, Dance Parties and Youth Week.

Community Safety Committee

The Canterbury Community Protection Committee was originally called the Street Prostitution Committee and was formed to resolve street prostitution problems along Canterbury Road.

More recently the Committee has agreed to broaden its focus and its aims to prevent crime and promote community safety. The Committee research and monitor trends in local crime and consult with the community so that efforts to reduce crime can be effectively targeted. It is made up of Councillors, Police, Canterbury Community Health Centre staff, Council staff and representatives from various community groups as required.

Some of the Committee's aims are to make recommendations to the State Government for legislative changes to eliminate street prostitution, investigate youth issues and formulate strategies to better meet the needs of young people in the area, to take action to eliminate or prevent crime in Canterbury and to assist in reducing the fear of crime in the community.
