Personal Alarm Response Systems
When it comes to personal safety, then just like home security, prevention is better than cure. If you live on your own and feel your personal safety could be at risk, there are currently three services providing monitoring and emergency response systems which can be accessed by residents of Canterbury City. These are Telecross and Neighbour Aid.
Why do I need one of these services?
Canterbury Council's Community Safety and Crime Prevention Summit identified the need to promote personal alarms for the elderly, people with a disability, domestic violence victims and others feeling unsafe in their homes.
How can one of these services help me?
The chance of serious injury or illness after a fall is increased if medical attention is not sought immediately. By preventing the situation where a person is left to lie unattended for longer than 24 hours, a quick response reduces the incidence of serious complications such as pneumonia developing.
Telecross
Australian Red Cross volunteers telephone clients between 8.00am and 9.00am every morning for a short friendly chat. If there is no answer a second call is made. If there is still no response an emergency check procedure is initiated and assistance arranged. This service is free to people who live alone, have a disability, are medically at risk, or could benefit from a daily phone call to combat their isolation. Telecross can also be provided on a temporary basis, for example, if a carer is away or a client is ill. Telecross can be contacted on 9229 4222.
Neighbour Aid Volunteer Service
The Riverwood Community Centre Neighbour Aid Service, funded under the Home and Community Care Program, provides a weekly "keep in touch" call for house bound people. A volunteer comes in on a Tuesday and calls 30 people. This service is free and provides a social as well as monitoring function once a week. The Neighbour Aid can be contacted on 9533 0100.
