Korean DancersMulticultural Programs and Services

Through our our Multicultural programs and services we aim to provide a future direction for Canterbury City Council and the community in relation to issues affecting people of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. In addition to this we wish to define Council's role in advocacy, facilitation and support of migrant organisations. This will help us to identify existing gaps in services and where possible define strategies to combat this.

By providing a rational and systemic method for planning migrant services in the Canterbury region we aim to encourage the on-going participation of residents of CALD backgrounds in the identification of their own service needs.

Policy and Planning

Canterbury City Council has been a leader in multicultural policies since 1988 when we established our Local Ethnic Affairs Policy Statement (LEAPS) as the first Council in New South Wales. Our Multicultural Policy today is an integral part of our Social Plan and it evolves around implementation of the Annul Action Plans for improved services and programs for the residents of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD). Copies of the Multicultural Social Plan can also be obtained by telephoning our Community Development section on 9789 9456.

Through the Multicultural Social Plan we aim to promote harmonious community relations and foster co-operation, mutual understanding and community pride among all groups in our area. For more information visit our Policies and Plans page.
