Disability Access Committee
Overview and proceedings
The Disability Access Committee was established in September 1993. The aim of the Committee is to improve access in the community for residents who have a disability. The Committee is made up of residents with disabilities, carers, representatives from disability organisations and service providers. It meets to discuss issues and carry out projects of importance to residents in Canterbury City.
The Committee has carried out a number of worthwhile projects that have benefited our residents with a disability. These include:
- Providing advice for Council's Social Planning Policy regarding residents with a disability
- Supporting funding applications and establishing new services for people with disabilities in the City
- Conducting disability access audits of Council's buildings/facilities and recommending improvements
- Reviewing Council's footpaths and recommending improvements
- Installed pool hoist in Canterbury Aquatic Centre
- Installed hearing loops in Senior Citizens Centres and Libraries
- Surveyed disability parking spaces in Canterbury, recommending improvements and additional spaces where necessary
- Compiled Mobility Map/Access Guides of Campsie and Lakemba CBD's
- Assisted in the development of tactual information on bin lids for Council's waste service to assist the vision impaired
- Devised a policy on providing Committee reports and Council information in formats for the vision impaired.
- Devised a policy for the provision of disability access at Council events and festivals.
