Youth Council
About the Youth Council
Canterbury Youth Council is made up of 15 dynamic young people who either live, work or study in Canterbury City. Youth Council represent young people's views and advise Canterbury City Council on a wide range of issues, including providing input into the:
- design of resources,
- design programs and
- the implementation of facilities
- Youth Policy
for young people. Youth Council meets once a month at Canterbury Council Chambers at 5.30 for approximately two hours.
Policy and charter
The Youth Council Charter and Advisory Committees Policy has been developed to provide the Youth Council with guidance in achieving its aim to advise Council on affairs and formulation of Council's specific youth policy. Both documents are available for download below.
What do they do?
Youth Council get involved in a variety of projects and activities throughout the year. The major event on the calendar is the Youth X Festival, held during Youth Week in April. In addition, Youth Council are also involved in the following:
- Identifying youth needs
- Planning and facilitating projects
- applying for grants
- participating as a group in Clean Up Australia Day
- participating in an annual training camp. The camp combines recreational and learning activities as well as providing an opportunity for Youth Council to do some planning for the year.
- working with staff and participants on school holiday activities
- facilitating small group activities during Youth Environment Day activities organised by Council with local schools
- participating in Youth Careers Week held in June at Belmore Youth Resource Centre
- participating in National Young Leaders Day, a conference organised by the Young Leaders Foundation
- working on small projects such as providing input and direction into the production of an information CD Rom on local Youth Services.
Why should I join the Youth Council?
There are many advantages of becoming a member of the Youth Council. Some of these include:
- Representing youth in the decision making process for youth issues
- Being actively involved in the planning and development of youth facilities
- Meeting new people and forming friendships
- Having awesome experiences including a Youth Council Camp
- Organising and coordinating youth events including the Youth X Festival
- Gaining an understanding of Government Processes
