What are the Ron Rudder Community Access Awards?

The Ron Rudder Community Access Awards are an initiative of the Disability Access Committee of Canterbury City Council. The Awards are in memory of former committee member Mr Ron Rudder. The Awards recognise outstanding efforts in promoting access to community facilities and services in Canterbury City for people with disabilities.

Disability access can be in the form of physical access, i.e. improvements or modifications to building structures or can be through the development of processes that encourage participation in community activities for people with a disability. An individual who has given generously of their time to assist participation, has developed processes to assist participation or has promoted the rights of people with a disability to participate, may also be nominated.

Who is eligible to nominate / be nominated?

Businesses and organisations that provide goods, services and facilities within Canterbury City or a Canterbury City resident are eligible under the following categories:

  • Business/Commercial -- For example retail stores, restaurants, recreational facilities.
  • Community Services -- For example government funded agencies, community centres, schools, sporting/recreational clubs, service clubs, and churches.
  • Individuals -- Any individual or group/organisation may make nominations.

Are there prizes?

Yes, the winner in each category will receive a cheque for $750, runners up will receive a cheque for $250. In addition each winner will receive a framed certificate signed by the Mayor of Canterbury City. Winners and runners-up of the business and community organisation awards will receive a decal that they can affix to their business window identifying them as a Ron Rudder Community Access Awards 2008 winner.

What should I include with the nomination?

An explanation of how the business, organisation or individual has worked to improve access or participation for people with a disability in our community.

This may include things such as:

  • Actively assisting people with disabilities in the community.
  • Undertaking structural improvements to make premises disability accessible.
  • Developing strategies to promote active participation of people with disabilities
  • Providing disability awareness training or education to staff.
